Theorizing their work as synthetic social support (SSS) helps to critically evaluate them.Levels of social support are strongly associated with health outcomes and inequalities. The use of lay health workers (LHWs) has been suggested by policy makers across the world as an intervention to identify risks to health and to promote health, particularly in disadvantaged communities. The latter two qualities of this synthetic form of social support may have benefits over spontaneous networks by improving the opportunities for the cultivation of new relationships (both strong and weak ties) outside the women's existing spontaneous networks that can have a positive impact on them and by offering a reliable source of health information and support in a chaotic environment. The concept of SSS can help inform policy makers about how deploying lay workers may enable them to achieve desired outcomes, specify their programme theories and evaluate accordingly.

Many countries have adopted some form of legal participation for lay citizens, generally in the hopes of enhancing a legal system’s perceived legitimacy, reducing bias and judicial corruption, and infusing diverse perspectives and community values into the legal process. But no two lay participation systems are the same, informed as they are by each country’s unique political, legal, social, and cultural realities.“If you were to say someone is a jury scholar…the way Valerie and I came up, you would probably be talking primarily about a social psychologist and someone who was trained in, and maybe even privileges, the experimental methodology,” Professor Rose explains. “It was exciting because before, the work by people who studied these different types of lay participation was quite scattered,” Professor Hans adds.“It’s given me a better sense of the political nature of lay participation and what it means to people. Also the importance of context, including political context, social context, and legal context,” says Professor Hans. “A number of the other countries who are represented in our CRN…have a radically different legal tradition from the US.Learn more about Collaborative Research Network 4 scholars, who study juries, lay judges, and other citizen participation in legal systems.

Not unexpectedly, differences associated with social class were found. However, differences also appeared to be associated with the outcome of the illness for both nonmanual and manual families considered separately: families where wives acknowledged fewer sources of network support, and where such sources were predominantly restricted to families of origin of either or both spouses, tended to experience less favourable outcomes (i.e. “B”, and especially “C”, as defined above). Perceptions of support at the crisis had sometimes proved unrealistic in the aftermath. Nearly one in four women, while acknowledging practical help, felt that they lacked lay consultants and this often appeared associated with unfavourable outcome.Adult children as a source of sustained help and, more unusually, as lay consultants seemed to be particularly valuable for wives of manual workers, sometimes compensating for difficulties experienced in consulting husbands. This study forms part of a larger sociological study made with the help of a grant from the Social Science Research Council in 1970–1972 into ways in which families coped with the crisis presented by husbands' myocardial infarction. Lay Theories BIBLIOGRAPHY Source for information on Lay Theories: International Encyclopedia of the Social Sciences dictionary. Such lay theories often reflect the core beliefs of people living in a given culture or environment. Since the 1990s there has been greater recognition that people’s perceptions are filtered through and guided by their lay theories and thus there is not one universal way for people to perceive and respond to the same social information.Researchers—namely cognitive, social, personality, and developmental psychologists—have identified different kinds of lay theories and their far-reaching impact on judgments and behaviors toward the self, individual others, and groups. Lay perceivers can rather easily report their lay theories, agreeing or disagreeing with simple, straightforward sentences reflecting those ideas (e.g., “people who work hard succeed”).As one example, individuals who hold the lay theory that people cannot change their personality, morality, or intelligence (e.g., entity theory) tend to give up in the face of an academic or social failure; often judge a defendant as guilty based on minimal negative information about his or her character; and frequently endorse stereotypes of socially stigmatized groups.Lay theories are readily used in everyday life in part because they are socially transmitted and shared but also because they are functional. Like scientific theories, lay theories provide understanding, prediction, and a sense of control over one’s social world.

Physicians have extensive clinical knowledge and are thus uniquely positioned to offer public health education through social media (SM) platforms. However, it may be challenging for them to effectively communicate complex medical information to lay people with varying levels of related knowledge. Moreover, through social media, patients may provide informational support to one another (Rueger et al., 2021). Drawing on theoretical concepts of co-production and tinkering, Campbell (2021) observed online communities focused on wellness and have shown how users of the community provided each other with concrete informational support using their lay expertise.Recent literature on the public understanding of science has focused on replacing the deficit model of public communication in which experts dissemina…For a future understanding of when and how these interactions supplement or replace offline doctor-patient interactions, it is essential to understand who interacts, about what, and how these interactions can be categorized in a taxonomy. We draw on affordance theory and employ a mixed-methods approach to study social media interactions among healthcare users and providers. We first engage in qualitative content analysis, which is followed by cluster analysis. We identify five archetypal interactions and categorize these in a taxonomy that adds to current literature on how social media is utilized in the healthcare context. We also provide a clear and systematic overview of the interactions in different social media categories that can stimulate future research regarding doctor-patient interactions.

In response to a sluggish travel season, the PepsiCo-owned snack brand is dishing out chips that typically are only available in foreign countries. With about 6.5 million followers on Facebook, 960,000 on Instagram and 455,000 on Twitter, Lay's has a niche audience on social media that's most likely to engage in the campaign to win limited-edition flavors. The move follows the brand's numerous other campaigns to introduce new flavors that get people talking on social media and maintain interest in the brand. Lay's last month introduced five flavors inspired by food from famous restaurants in different cities, while also donating money to help those restaurants support their respective communities.Lay's "Flavor Trip" campaign on social media arrives after other recent efforts targeting a younger audience. Lay's snacks this year were featured throughout "Endless," a docu-series on photo-messaging app Snapchat. The brand also created six-second, non-skippable ads that ran throughout the season.Lay's is giving social media users a chance to win potato chips with flavors that typically are only available in foreign countries.
The brand's recent efforts have sought to appeal to younger consumers with a focus on social media. Lay's in July brought back its limited-run "Smiles" packaging that features photos of real people's smiles on some of its packaging. The first eight-week run of this campaign in 2018 resulted in a daily posting on social media of 700 selfies with the Lay's bags, according to the brand, as well as more than 30,00+ tweets with the campaign hashtag, 10,000 Instagram posts and 2.8 million shares of a special Snapchat filter. The PepsiCo brand will support its first new package design in a dozen years with TV, digital and OOH ads.The packaging refresh of Lay's entire product roster is the latest effort by the PepsiCo brand to appeal to younger consumers. Changing the bag design to feature an Instagram-inspired view of the chip inside the bag helps bring the packaging more in-line with how millennial and Gen Z consumers are used to visualizing food.More shares using the hashtag #SaveSpud would result in a pardon, but more #SizzleSpud shares meant he would achieve what the brand optimistically described as "every potato's dream" — becoming a Lay’s chip.
